Signs of Scoliosis

Parents should be aware of the various signs of scoliosis. The following physical asymmetries may indicate scoliosis in children and adolescents.

  • uneven shoulder heights
  • uneven hips or waist
  • prominence of shoulder blade
  • increased space between the body and the elbow while standing in natural posture
  • one leg appears longer than the other
  • one breast appears larger than the other
  • appearance of leaning to one side
  • chest or rib prominence

Only an orthopedist can diagnose scoliosis and its etiology properly. If any signs are present or a school screening test is positive, a physician should be consulted before any corrective action is taken.
