Wise Engagement
In the practice of mindfulness, when we are aware of a thought, emotion or sensation arising, we make a conscious choice about whether or not to engage with it. Choosing not to engage is different than avoidance/resistance or repression. It is an intimate act of discernment. For example, if we find ourselves caught up in the same story again and again about something that happened (or we fear might happen), with awareness and discernment, we can choose to gently disengage from that pattern of thinking each time it arises. This is also true with emotional reactivity. We can acknowledge and feel the emotion without fanning the flames of reactivity. In a broader sense, this is training for how we engage in all aspects of our lives. Are we engaging wisely in how we spend our time, who we spend it with, how we live?
We’ll explore wise engagement in a variety of ways. The group is open to anyone who has completed an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Program. Class time will include sitting meditation and discussions. Suggestions, readings and email support will be given for daily formal and informal practices.
