Unit Description: 29 beds, with the capability for 12 intermediate beds. Patient Populations: Nursing staff provide care to a broad population of pediatric patients including infants to young adults. Medical/Surgical services include cardiology, pulmonology, general pediatrics, neurology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics. Intermediate care includes patients with congenital heart surgery, acute respiratory distress due to asthma/RSV, and ventilatory management. Unit Information: The diverse patient populations provide nurses with the opportunity to learn first-hand about caring for children with acute and chronic health conditions, as well as, post-operative surgical care on a newly remodeled floor with all new state-of-the-art equipment. Initial orientation includes educational content as well as 320 hours of hands-on clinical experience with a nurse preceptor. Nurses work 12 hour shifts and every third weekend or weekend option. A primarily RN staff work with a team of nursing assistants, clerks, and respiratory therapists. Nursing skills include continuous cardiac arrhythmia monitoring, close assessment of post-operative hemodynamic status, mechanical ventilation including CPAP/BiPAP and tracheostomy cares, chest tubes, continuous antiarrhythmic/vasoactive drug therapy, central lines, traction, and Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA).
