Unit Description: 35 exam rooms, 4 procedure rooms, 2 infusion rooms including an on-site pediatric lab.
Patient Populations: The Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) offers comprehensive care to patients from infancy through adolescence. This clinic focuses on multiple pediatric specialties including allergy/pulmonary, cardiology, genetics, neurology, renal, urology, hematology-oncology, endocrine, gastroenterology, psychology, rheumatology, pediatric and thoracic surgery.
Unit Information: Nursing staff work with a large team of healthcare providers including Nurse Practitioners, Physician's Assistants, Child Life Specialists, Physicians, Physical Therapists, Social Workers, Dietitians, and Respiratory Therapists. Research studies are often conducted in the clinic setting, and the nursing staff often participate in data collection. Orientation is individualized for each new staff member, based on prior experience and the individual clinical areas for which that staff member will be assigned. Staff members document online. Staff scheduling is based on a pattern.
Clinic hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 0800-1700.
Number of patients seen daily: approximately 200
Nursing staff provide care for multiple patients with unique individual needs in a comfortable office setting. Nurses assist with assessment and diagnostic procedures, on the spot teaching, pre-operative preparation, medication administration, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, procedural preparation, biofeedback, and bronchoscopy.
The PSC staff nurses provide excellent pain management for patients undergoing procedures with the support of evidence based practice. Multiple pain assessment tools, various distraction methods, use of Child Life Specialists, and the use of EMLA and ELA-Max are a few of the routine practices implemented to reduce the patients pain.
