Philosophy
Education is a process. "Becoming educated" is not an end in itself; it is simply a means to a goal. The identification and delineation of that goal is crucial for any educational endeavor. We believe that lifelong learning is essential for nurses to maintain and increase competence in nursing practice. Nursing continuing education and staff development should be based on adult learning principles and guided by principles of ethics.
In a tertiary medical center, it is necessary to provide specialized knowledge within the clinical area. Our centralized orientation provides the education that is common to hospital areas and facilitates and supports those programs that are provided by instructors most competent to provide specialized education. We then support the clinical divisions and units to provide population specific orientation using a didactic interactive class setting and a preceptor model for on-unit experience.
