Salaries

The Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care is pleased to offer highly competitive salaries based on level of education and experience. We offer significant differentials for off-shifts, weekends and in-patient units, in addition to incentive pay for working additional shifts. Our exceptional benefit package is the equivalent of 33 percent of the annual salary. Individual salaries will be discussed at interview.

Health, life, disability, and retirement insurance, vacation, and leave

University of Iowa staff health and life, disability, retirement, vacation, and leave benefits are summarized on the University Benefits site. Professional and Scientific staff include nurse managers, assistant nurse managers, nursing supervisors, advanced registered nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, nurse clinicians, and staff nurses. Staff nurses, advanced registered nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, and nurse clinicians are included in the tertiary health care bargaining agreement. Supervisory positions are not covered by the tertiary health care bargaining agreement. Merit staff include nursing assistants, psychiatric nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, nursing unit clerks, medical assistants, surgical technologists, hemodialysis technicians, and clerical/secretarial staff. Holidays

Full-time staff accrue 11 paid holidays each year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday following Thanksgiving, a day before or after Christmas, Christmas Day, plus two holidays included in your accrued vacation account. Part-time staff accruals are pro-rated.

Professional Development

Tuition Reimbursement (staff access only): Staff members who work at least half time may receive reimbursement for up to three semester hours of undergraduate, graduate, or certification course work each semester.

In-services: The Department of Nursing and clinical divisions regularly offer educational courses to continually improve patient care.

University of Iowa College of Nursing RN to BSN Progression Program (Adjusted Tuition Reimbursement): Registered nurses who work at least 85% or greater may receive full reimbursement each semester for Phase Two course work in the program resulting in a BSN degree. Staff who are less than 85% will be reimbursed based upon their percentage of appointment. A three-year commitment to UI Hospitals and Clinics is expected upon completion.

Continuing Education Credits: Professional education courses are available to staff at no cost for in-house Department of Nursing sponsored programs and at a nominal cost for programs outside of UI Hospitals and Clinics. Through these courses, registered nurses can earn continuing education credits toward re-licensure. The Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care is an approved provider of the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Liability Benefits

When providing services within the scope of assigned responsibilities at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, staff are covered under the State Tort Claims Act. (Under the State Tort Claims Act, legal fees and any judgments against employees will be paid by the state of Iowa. The state cannot sue the individual employee to recover the money paid.)

Work Schedule

Many varied schedules from part-time to full-time are available. New positions are posted for staff on a weekly basis. Many units offer self-scheduling ranging from 8- 10 or 12 hour shifts. We strive to provide RNs 1:3 weekend schedule with weekend options available.

Orientation

New staff members are provided a comprehensive, individualized orientation. We begin with a one week centralized class which includes orientation to the University of Iowa, UI Hospitals and Clinics and benefit programs. Computer classes are encompassed in the orientation. Mentors are assigned to assist new staff.

Other Nursing Benefits

Staff Health Services: The UI Hospitals and Clinics provides, at no charge, the required initial health screening, with TB testing and immunizations as needed, including hepatitis B, tetanus, and MMR. Annual flu shots and required TB screening are also provided.

Parking: Parking is available in paved, lighted lots. Free shuttle service to lots is provided. Rates for parking are $14 to $45/month, depending on lot and shift assignment. For further information, call the Parking and Transportation Department at (319) 335-1475.

Dining Services: Staff may purchase meals in the staff dining rooms at a reduced rate.

University Facilities: Staff members have access to the University of Iowa's library system and recreational facilities. Discounts are available to athletic events which includes the Big Ten competition.

Banking: The University of Iowa is served by a credit union, which offers a full range of banking services. Automatic payroll deposit is also available. Instant access banking (ATM) is available at three locations within the hospital.

Uniforms: Uniforms worn by merit staff are issued by the hospital at no cost upon request, or employees may purchase their own uniforms. Laundry service for hospital-issued uniforms is available at no cost. Staff must furnish a watch with a second hand and white shoes.

Photo Identification Card: The UI Hospitals and Clinics staff identification badge, which staff are required to wear at all times, allows staff members charging privileges in the cafeteria, gift shop, and access to the University of Iowa libraries and recreation services.
