Thirty-nine nursing students are enhancing their education and clinical skills by participating in the 2006 UI Hospitals and Clinics Nursing Summer 10/Externship program. They are from Allen College, Cedar Falls; Clarke College, Dubuque; Iowa Wesleyan, Mt. Pleasant; Luther College, Decorah; Morningside, Sioux City; Mt. Mercy, Cedar Rapids; and The University of Iowa College of Nursing.
The nursing students are working on a variety of unit-based assignments in all Nursing divisions, including Behavioral Health, Children's and Women's, Perioperative, Medical Surgical Services and Intensive and Specialty Services. The paid externship will last a minimum of ten weeks over the summer. During this time, six educational seminars will be held to provide additional teaching on innovative topics. At the end of the program, the Summer 10 students will also have the opportunity to remain in the UI Hospitals and Clinics hourly pool during the academic year.

The Summer 10/Externship students gathered for a group photo at their first educational seminar on May 31st, 2006. Presentations at the seminar highlighted nursing pursuits at UI Hospitals and Clinics, including Magnet activities, education, research, informatics and human resources.
