Burn Treatment/Trauma Unit
Unit Description: 16 bed monitored unit. Adult and pediatric burn and wound patients are directly admitted to the unit.
Patient Population: Adult and pediatric burn victims from direct admission through rehabilitation; complex wound management patients; adult and adolescent trauma patients; surgical/medical patients requiring intermediate cardiac monitoring; and exfoliating skin disorder patients.
Unit Information: The Burn Treatment/Trauma Unit received a Level I Certificate of Verification through the American College of Surgeons in 1996, and has recently been reverified at that level. The unit participates actively at the local, community, state, and national level in outreach education to all age groups on burn prevention and burn safety. Outreach education is also presented to emergency care providers throughout the state of Iowa. The nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team host a week-long summer camp for pediatric burn survivors. The nursing staff participate in self-scheduling and pride themselves on the expertise in burn/trauma care and autonomous nursing decision-making on the unit.
Multidisciplinary team approach that includes: physicians, staff nurses, physician's assistant, dietitian, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, child life specialists, social worker, patient care navigator, chaplain, psychiatric nursing support, pharmacy, and additional specialty consultation if needed. Skilled wound care providers for burns and difficult wound management, hemodynamic monitoring including ventilation needs for adult and pediatric burn and wound patients.
