Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
Unit Description: 12 bed Intensive Care Unit.
Patient Populations: The CVICU is primarily a pre-operative cardiac unit, with patient conditions ranging from myocardial infarctions and coronary interventions to care of the patients with heart failure, who may be waiting for, or who have undergone, heart transplantation. Often, we will see patients with multi-system failure, and occasionally, some that need post-operative management.
Unit Information: Our nurses are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team approach to caring for our patients, and because University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a major teaching and research institution, we often are involved in the research process, using the technology of the future in our care today. We utilize a self scheduling module, and offer an extensive 10 week orientation to the hospital, division, and unit.
Our dedicated staff is a nice mix of personnel new to the field, and those with a wealth of experience. Our nurses provide advanced hemodynamic care, and are able to use a mixture of medications, technology, and critical thinking skills to stabilize critically ill patients. We also emphasize the human side of things, creatively helping the patients and family members cope with the hospital experience.
Location: 4th floor, John Colloton Pavilion
