Neurosurgery Clinic
Unit description: Neurosurgery Clinic functions not only as a
clinic with scheduled patient appointments, but also as a walk-in clinic for neurosurgical
urgent care patients throughout the week. Over 7,000 patients are seen annually.
Diagnosis includes brain or spinal cord tumors, aneurysms, craniovertebral
abnormalities, spine and peripheral nerve injuries, and other neurological disorders.
Nurses in the clinic possess a number of skills necessary to care for an
age-diverse population ranging from newborns to the elderly. A typical clinic day
for the staff nurse would include assessing and educating perioperative patients,
assisting physicians with procedures, phlebotomy, halo removal or adjustment, suture
removal, intrathecal pump refills, telephone triage, providing patient education,
pediatric conscious sedation, and coordinating patient consults and appointments.
