Unit Description: 34 Monitored beds arranged in 4 bays. SICU provides total patient care to all adult surgical patient populations.
Patient Populations: The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) consists of four bays providing intensive surgical care to a primarily adult population. The population served includes acutely ill patients in the post-operative phase of major surgery.
SICU provides a full range of intensive care services, using advanced monitoring techniques and equipment. Monitors and therapies include Pulmonary Artery catheters, arterial lines, intracranial pressure monitoring and CSF drainage, ventilatory support, continuous infusion of vasoactive medications, pain management, care for micro-vascular reconstruction, advanced neurological monitoring, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), renal replacement therapies (CVVH), nitric oxide, and organ transplants.

Other: Desirable qualification for nursing staff includes: ACLS, CCRN, previous nursing experience. SICU is a fast-paced, dynamic unit with state-of-the art equipment and procedures. Registered nurses work 12 hour shifts, do self-scheduling, and have many opportunities to be involved in unit planning and development, including staff education, multidisciplinary care committee, and quality improvement.
The multidisciplinary team consists of staff physicians, registered nurses, unlicensed assistive personnel, social workers, registered dietitians, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, volunteers and administrative staff.
