It's bronze, it's marble, it's oak, and it's "magnetic." Barbara J. (BJ) Hannon, RN, Magnet Coordinator, isn't the only one attracted to what she calls "the most beautiful display case in the hospital."
The case, located on the main hallway on first floor near the Emergency Room, has attracted a lot of attention in the six months that it has been in use.
BJ explains that staff from the hospital's structural craft department asked hospital leaders how they could support the Magnet Initiative, a status conferred by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize facilities that provide high quality patient care, good patient outcomes, a collaborative work environment, and an emphasis on evidenced-based practice.
Scott Wieneke, a carpenter with the structural craft department, built the display case in about a week's time, and painter Steve Courtney did the finish work on it.
As BJ puts it, "they transformed a blank wall that had a plant in front of it, into a beautiful display case devoted to nursing excellence."
Currently on display are the people and equipment that make up trauma center nursing, an area where BJ has worked for several years. Next up will be nurses from the burn center.
"Each display will focus on the nurses themselves, celebrating their efforts," she says. Complete information about the hospitals and clinics' application for Magnet status is available for review in the Patients' Library, on eighth floor JCP.
