    Magnet Recognition Program®

Phases of Application

Phase One: Application
A two page document commits applicants to submitting their documents within two years. UI Hospitals and Clinics applied in July, 2002.

Phase Two: Submission of documentation and evaluation
This is the most critical phase of the process. The applying institution must provide written documentation in support of 65 Standards of Care that exemplify excellence of nursing.

Phase Three: Site Visit
The site visit occurs four months after the documents have been submitted to the ANCC. It involves community participation and public comment. A site visit may last two to five days and will include several reviewers who will examine the clinical staff and will interview nurses about various aspects of nursing at this hospital. It will be a time to celebrate our excellent practice!

Phase Four: Completion
The commission votes on awarding Magnet Status. This can take up to eight weeks to complete. Magnet status is awarded for four years.
