Hematology/Oncology-Palliative Care

Unit Description: 19 beds total, including 4 rooms specially designed for Palliative Care.

Patient Population: As a nurse on this 19-bed unit, you will provide specialized, comprehensive care to adult patients with Hematology and/or Oncology diagnoses. Populations seen on this unit include patients with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, malignant melanoma, and other types of cancers. You may also be caring for patients with hemophilia, sickle cell disease and other benign blood disorders. Another distinct opportunity on this clinical unit is in providing specialized end-of-life care to patients admitted into the recently remodeled Palliative Care section of 4- John Pappajohn East.

Unit Information: 4JPE is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only Comprehensive Center in the state of Iowa, as designated by the National Cancer Institute. As part of the unit staff, you will complete a comprehensive 8 week orientation program. This includes extensive direct patient care, guided by your RN preceptor, along with classroom lecture content, including a comprehensive chemotherapy training class and principles/concepts in Oncology Nursing. All staff participate in the self scheduling model to help balance personal life obligations with unit staffing needs. Many nurses on this unit hold the Oncology Nursing Certification. This oncology unit offers a vast array of opportunities for both the new graduate nurse and the experienced nurse looking for a caring environment and intriguing clinical experience.

Nurses play an important role in the multidisciplinary team, which includes unit-based pharmacists, social worker, physicians, dietician, infection control expert, activity therapist and chaplain.

Location: 4th floor, John Pappajohn Pavilion East
