Orthopaedics, Urology, and Ophthalmology
Unit Description: 47 acute beds divided into 2 units of 23 and 24 beds. Each unit is designed with 3 pods of 7-8 patients.
Patient Population: Adult patient population includes Orthopaedics, Urology, Ophthalmology plus overflow specialty area patients as needed. Surgical unit includes trauma; reconstructive joints; reconstructive bladders; tumor removals; spine, hand, and foot surgery; prosthetic devices; sports injuries; skeletal traction; kidney stones; nephrectomies; radical prostatectomies; wound care; and psychosocial services. Patients profit from Physical and Occupational therapy on the unit.
Unit Information: Self-scheduling and flex scheduling with 8 and 12 hour shifts benefit unit as well as staff and promote a healthy life both in and out of hospital. Our Nurse Manager and 2 Assistant Nurse Managers work as a team to assure a happy staff and happy patients. We emphasize communication with newsletters, in-services, staff meetings and Nurse Manager open door policy. Staff are encouraged to serve on one of 7 standing committees. Our unit pilots numerous projects. Our Orthopaedics Department is ranked in US News and World Report's top ten orthopaedic specialties.
Orientation program (usually 8 weeks based on RN's experience) includes orientation by Advanced Practice Nurse to the 3 specialty areas. Our excellent preceptors work diligently to give our new staff all the necessary experiences. Both units work together interchangeably to cover and assure a good patient outcome. Several RNs are certified in Orthopaedics.
