Gastrointestinal Surgery, Solid Organ
Transplant, and Bariatric Surgery Unit


Unit Description: 24 beds

Patient Populations: Post operative care for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures related to digestive disease, bariatrics, trauma, transplant, and general surgery. The transplant population includes liver, renal, and pancreas transplants.

Unit Information: RNs, Nursing Assistants, and nursing unit clerks working on this unit should have a desire to learn and use excellent assessment, prioritization, and time management skills. Staff on this unit are highly encouraged to participate in research activities, as well as unit based committee work.

Nurses and nursing assistants on 7JCE are successfully involved in self-scheduling. (Scheduling options include every 6th weekend and 8 and 12 hour shifts.) A wide array of experiences and opportunities to utilize and improve nursing skills are offered. Orientation is typically 8 weeks of unit orientation and 3 days of EKG training. Staff nurses are heavily involved with committee work and decision making on this unit.
