Main Operating Room


Unit Description: Main Operating Room (MOR) consists of 27 operating rooms which accommodates an average of 60-70 patients (adult and pediatric) daily in various surgical specialties. The MOR is open 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The

Patient Population: Surgical patients include cardiothoracic, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, gynecology, plastic reconstruction, and dentistry.

Unit Information: Intra-operative specialties are divided into six teams comprised of registered nurses and surgical technologists, with approximately 20 staff on each team. Responsibilities include scrubbing and circulating for the RN with the primary emphasis on scrubbing for the technologist. Day and evening shifts range from 7 to 12 hours. Weekends may have some 12 hour shifts. Staff works primarily straight shifts with rotation to a weekend every six weeks.

Staff members are responsible for participating in the governance of the unit and contributing to CareMaps®, policy and procedures. Staff nurses are under a bargaining unit.

Intraoperative services are divided into six teams comprised of Registered Nurses and Surgical Technologists.
Teams include:
Team 1: Cardiothoracic, Peripheral Vascular and Transplants (Heart and Lung)
Team 2: Neurosurgery
Team 3: Orthopedics
Team 4: Urology, Gynecology, and Transplant (Kidney, Pancreas and Liver)
Team 5: Otolaryngology, Oral Surgery and Ophthalmology
Team 6: Plastics, General Surgery-Pediatric & Adult

Team 1-6 staff members work primarily straight shifts with rotation to a weekend every six weeks and also rotate to an evening or night shift.
