Post Anesthesia Care Unit
Unit Description: 6 bed Pre-Surgical Care Unit, 16 bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit, 8 bed Second Stage Recovery unit and 12 exam rooms in Day of Surgery Admissions
Patient Population: Inpatients and outpatients of all ages who have an operative procedures in the Main Operating Room, plus select patients from Urology Resection Room, ECT, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Cath lab, Digestive Disease Center, and various radiology suites.
Unit Information: Number of procedures/encounters daily: Post Anesthesia Care Unit and Presurgical Care Unit, 50-65 daily. Second Stage Recovery Facility, 15-20 daily. Other information about the unit: Experience in intensive care nursing a plus. Nurses work a rotating shift of starting times, most arel 8 hour shifts. Call only on nights and weekends and holidays.
Immediate postoperative monitoring. Patients remain in PACU 1-2 hours. Day of Surgery Admissions completes OR preparation. Pre-Surgical Care Unit provides care and completes OR preparation to patients for 30-60 minutes immediately prior to their entering the OR. Second Stage Recovery Facility cares for the patients who are going home same day of surgery. Average length of stay 2 hours after that first stage of recovery is over. Cares in Second Stage Recovery Facility include postoperative patient/family teaching.
