Conduct of research is an integral component of the Research, Quality, and Outcomes Management Program. Conduct of research is facilitated through the Department Research Committee, co-chaired by Marita Titler, PhD, RN, FAAN (marita-titler@uiowa.edu) and Vicki Kraus, PhD, ARNP, CDE (vicki-kraus@uiowa.edu). The committee is composed of eleven masters'- and PhD- prepared nurses who are skilled in:
- Reviewing research proposals
- Providing consultation to staff about the conduct of clinical research
- Grant writing
- Use of evidence in practice
Functions of the Research Committee are to:
- Review research proposals effecting the Department of Nursing for protection of human subjects and anticipated impact upon departmental resources
- Encourage and support the conduct and dissemination of nursing research at UI Hospitals and Clinics, regionally, nationally, and inernationally
- Provide education and consultation to nursing staff on conducting research, proposal development, and grant writing
- Develop mechanisms for using evidence-based practice to improve quality of care
- Provide leadership for use of research findings and other evidence as an integral component of clinical practice and management decision making
- Promote discussion and exchange of information regarding status of evidence-based practice and process improvement projects
- Provide education and consultation to staff regarding the process and product of evidence-based practice projects
- Maintain committee liaison and communication with the College of Nursing to encourage collaborative research and joint evidence-based practice projects among UI Hospitals and Clinics staff, faculty, and students
- Provide interface for communication and cooperation with the College of Nursing, Human Subjects Office, and Sponsored Programs Office
- Consult with process improvement and evidence-based practice project teams about the critique of research and funding opportunities
- Develop selected areas for interdisciplinary research and/or evidence-based practice that are strategically aligned with departmental and institutional goals
- Provide a liaison to the Nursing Quality Management Committee, the Nursing Patient Education Committee, and the Nursing Staff Education Committee
