Current Evidence-Based Practice Projects


Currently, the department emphasis is on monitoring of several evidence-based practice initiatives each year to assure congruence of the practice with evidence-based policies and procedures, and reinfusion of evidence-based practices as necessary. Examples of these department-wide initiatives include:
  • Management of pain in the acute care and outpatient settings is being led by Anne Smith, RN, MSN (anne-smith@uiowa.edu).
  • Assessment and interventions to decrease patient's risk for falling while hospitalized is being led by Leah Shever, PhD, RN (leah-shever@uiowa.edu).
  • Facilitating visitation of family pets in the acute care setting is being led by Deb Picone, PhD, RN (debra-picone@uiowa.edu).
  • Nurse retention is being led by Deb Picone, PhD, RN(debra-picone@uiowa.edu).
  • Oral mucositis—assessment and prevention

Additional EBP initiatives are managed at the unit and/or divisional level. Examples of these projects include but are not limited to:

  • Crisis care planning for acute psychiatric events
  • Preventing central line infections
  • BP measurement for patients with large arms
  • Effectiveness of individual therapy and group therapy in diagnosis of depression
  • Suicide risk assessment
  • Prevention of aspiration pneumonia from enteral feeding
  • NG placement verification in pediatric and adult patients
  • Perioperative brushless surgical hand asepsis
  • Double-gloving for OR procedures
  • Parent participation in medical rounds in PICU
  • Family transition from the PICU to the pediatric floor
  • Comfort measures for children during venipuncture
  • Minimal stimulation of neonates with persistent fetal circulation
  • Abdominal assessment (eliminating bowel sound monitoring) after abdominal surgery
  • Restraint and seclusion reduction
  • DVT prevention in the orthopedic and MICU patient populations
  • Use of pre-connected urinary catheters to decrease UTI's
  • Preventing readmission for CHF patients
  • Ergonomics to prevent patient and staff injuries
  • Reducing VAP
  • Reducing MRSA
