The Department of Nursing Quality and Outcomes Management Program is part of the UI Hospitals and Clinics Quality and Performance Improvement Program.
The program has both centralized and decentralized components. The centralized component focuses on core indicators, assessed and analyzed by the Clinical and Outcomes Management Office, that are applicable to all divisions and units. These centralized data are distributed to accountable individuals for review and follow-up using an action oriented plan.
The decentralized responsibility for improvement of patient care is delegated to the five clinical nursing divisions and their respective nursing units. Each division has assigned staff the responsibility for quality and outcomes management who, in turn, represent their respective division on the departmental Quality Management Committee.
The Associate Directors for Clinical Services are responsible for the Quality and Outcomes Management program at the divisional level and nurse managers are ultimately responsible for quality of patient care within their units.
Quality of care is managed through a systematic performance improvement process, summarized as follows:
- Measuring performance using data sources that provide relevant information on important aspects of care
- Disseminating data to accountable individuals and teams
- Reviewing data and information by appropriate individuals and teams
- Establishing an action plan for performance improvement that is data driven
- Implementing and evaluating the action plan
Implementation of action plans and subsequent improvement in care are reported using standardized reporting forms to the Chair of the Department of Nursing Quality Management Committee.
