Body Mass Index: BMI

BMI stands for body mass index and is used to measure the percentage of body fat carried by an individual.  A muscular person and an overweight person may have similar body mass index, but have very different body fat composition.

BMI scores provide a useful tool for your weight loss team to determine risk of weight-related disease. Conditions like Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease begins to rise significantly with a BMI of over 25.

How can I find out my BMI?

Body Mass Calculator

If your BMI score is above 30 or in the upper 20s and creeping higher, you should consider the following:

  • Participate in at least 30 minutes of regular physical activity three to four times per week.
  • Wear a pedometer, with the goal of increasing your baseline steps by 10 percent every two to three weeks for a total of at least 10,000 steps per day.
  • Eat less to reduce your daily intake by 100 to 300 calories by modestly reducing sugar and/or saturated fat intake.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast every day.
  • Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
  • Check your progress regularly.
  • Partner with someone who has similar goals.
