What is a Pediatric Urologist?

Christopher S. Cooper, MD
J. Christopher Austin, MD

A pediatric urologist is someone who specializes in the treatment of children and young adults who have problems involving the kidney, bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, vagina, testicles and penis). Pediatric urologists have undergone several years of additional training following their general urology training. The treatment given by a pediatric urologist may require surgical correction, medication or even behavior modification.

Patients range in age from premature infants through late adolescence and, for some children with complicated problems, into young adulthood. Operations are performed on an outpatient basis whenever possible.

We recognize the special needs of young patients and their families. In addition to offering a welcoming, comfortable environment for youngsters and parents, we provide special expertise in areas treating disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and male and female reproductive systems.
