Art Cart and Art Supplies

Art Cart

Studies have shown that patients who view art recover more quickly.

In a 1994 article in American Artist, Dr. Leah Dickstein claims, "Art affects our immune system: It affects the opiate levels in the brain." She continues, "Art gives them (patients) a sense of control, whereas in medicine you don't have a sense of control." When people who are ill view and make art, their attitude and outlook can change. When people are relaxed, it allows the immune system to operate optimally.

Having the opportunity to choose a poster for one's room provides patients some authority over their surroundings, thereby providing a sense of empowerment as well as producing a more personal environment. The Art Cart provides such a service at no cost, offering patients a choice of fine art reproductions and popular posters for their rooms from an inventory exceeding 800 framed prints. In 1980, the Art Cart visited eight inpatient units during its rounds each week, primarily for long term and ambulatory patients; currently staffed by 10 volunteers, it now visits 16 inpatient units every two weeks.

Artwork for the Art Cart reflects the heterogeneity of the hospital population. Included among the prints are fine art reproductions, sports posters, animal prints, religious subjects, floral reproductions and other subject matter which offers diversion, comfort, and aesthetic enjoyment. The interaction with a concerned volunteer has also proven to be a welcome form of socializing for patients. In addition to scheduled visits, special patient requests are serviced by Project Art assistants on an as-needed daily basis.

Art Supplies

Art supplies are made available upon request from patients, as the studio art experience for patients is an important component of the healing process at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Materials include acrylic and tempera paint, watercolors, crayons, pastels, markers, paper, and coloring books.

Initiated in June 1981 with a generous contribution of art supplies from Lind's Artworld and the Volunteer Program, supplies are now a regular part of the general expense budget of Project Art. Family members, Patient Representatives, Pastoral Services, Social Services, Activities Therapy, the Patients' Library, the Art Cart volunteers and Nursing Service staff members often assist by initiating or channeling the patient's request.
