Supporting Children in
Their Need for Play
Child life specialists seek to promote the continuation of normal childhood activity and development while children are in the hospital.
Established in 1976, the Child Life Program is the oldest such program in Iowa. Certified child life specialists provide care tailored to the needs of each child and their family members. Understanding normal growth and development, as well as the stress associated with illness and hospitalization are the foundations of this program.
Child Life care focuses on:
- Normalizing the environment
- Providing opportunities for socialization
- Offering various forms of play
- Encouraging expression of feelings
- Involving family members
- Facilitating coping and positive adjustment
