Intern Responsibilities

A. Prior to, or at the very beginning of the internship, Child Life expects each intern to:
  • Become familiar with the Child Life orientation materials. Pay particular attention to the 'general guidelines.' Interns are responsible for mastering and applying guideline content. Questions about content should be directed to the internship supervisor.
  • Identify personal goals for the internship. Commit them to writing
  • Discuss written goals with the supervisor by the end of the first week. Interns and supervisors will review them periodically to determine progress.

B. During the internship, Child Life expects each intern to:
  • Follow the clinical rotation schedule provided by the supervisor.
  • Keep a daily journal including the day's activities and the intern's feelings, reactions, questions and concerns.
  • Attend Child Life staff meetings, and other meetings, as assigned.
  • Complete all assigned readings.
  • Meet weekly with the intern supervisor(s) to discuss assigned readings, daily journal entries, projects, papers, progress, difficulties, etc.
  • Observe procedure support interventions used in the treatment rooms. The intern will schedule a time to observe each member of the Child Life staff providing procedural support, and complete a Procedural Support Observation Form for each specialist observed.
  • Conduct procedural support interventions as assigned by the Child Life supervisor.
  • Chart as the supervisor designates. Student chart notes must be co-signed by the Child Life supervisor.
  • Complete a brief case history on an individual patient with the goal of becoming familiar with medical terminology, treatment plans, roles of hospital staff, and procedures. A good case history will involve use of the patient medial record, care plan, discussion of patient with medical staff, and 1:1 contact with the patient and family (in order to set-up goals and objectives for Child Life intervention with the patient).
  • Complete a senior project that will mutually benefit the Child Life Program and the student. This project should be completed by a date to be determined by the intern and supervisor.
  • Develop and present at least four activities that are new to this program. Activity type may vary (i.e. Cooking, crafts, media, etcÉ)
  • Prepare and present a journal review to the Child Life staff.
  • Submit all papers, bi-weeklies, and other written work on time. It is the intern's responsibility to have written work read and approved by the Child Life supervisor in advance of the University deadlines.

C. At the completion of the internship, Child Life expects each intern to:
  • Provide feedback to the Child Life staff by conducting a thoughtful evaluation of the internship experience, and submitting it at the end of the internship.
  • Meet with the Child Life Manager who will receive the feedback, and discuss the experience with the intern. The purpose of the feedback is to improve the program. Feedback content has no bearing on the internship grade.
