The music therapy program currently serves patients throughout the UI Hospitals and Clinics, including adult psychiatry and adult medical areas. Since many people are provided services in a wide variety of patient units, goals will vary according to the specific needs of each patient.
Adult Medical
Individual music therapy services in adult medical areas of the hospital are provided by referral to patients experiencing extended or repeated hospitalization, lack of social support, and/or accompanying fear, anxiety, or depression.
Music therapy interventions may:
- Increase coping skills
- Increase relaxation and stress management skills
- Decrease anxiety and pain perception
- Provide distraction and normalization of environment
- Provide an emotional and creative outlet
- Provide comfort and spiritual support
- Provide opportunities for reminiscence and life review
Adult Psychiatry
Weekly group music therapy services are currently offered to patients on inpatient psychiatric units and in partial hospitalization.
Individual music therapy services are provided by staff or patient referral. Music therapy goals are dependent on patient diagnoses and population.
Music therapy interventions may:
- Increase appropriate coping skills
- Improve stress management skills
- Decrease cognitive distortions
- Increase appropriate socialization skills
- Increase acceptance of responsibility
- Improve decision-making skills
- Increase expression of feelings/thoughts
- Increase opportunity for choice and control
- Improve anger management skills
- Increase self-esteem
- Increase/improve awareness of body image
