Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Apply?

In what areas of the hospital will I work?
The interns gain experience in many areas of the hospital including: behavioral health, pediatric, and adult medical units.

With what patient populations will I work?
Within the behavioral health area, interns will work with patients of all ages with a variety of mental health issues, including eating disorders, mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), behavior disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder), schizophrenia, and dementia.

Adult medical patients throughout the hospital may be referred for individual services. Patients from palliative care and intensive care units receive priority and may include patients diagnosed with cancer, traumatic brain injury, and developmental disabilities.

Interns will provide group and individual services for acute and chronically ill children diagnosed with cancer, heart defects, developmental disabilities, burns, cystic fibrosis, autoimmune disorders, traumatic head injury, as well as other less common diagnoses.

Interns may elect to complete an intensive course in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) working with premature infants. This course is primarily didactic with observation of music therapy services delivered in the NICU.

How is the internship set up?
The internship is divided into two rotations—behavioral health and pediatric medical. A minimum of 10 weeks is spent in each area. The intern may elect to participate in a four-week intensive rotation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

What will my hours be?
Interns work from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

What will I wear at the hospital?
Casual professional dress is most appropriate. Slacks (no jeans), comfortable shoes, and shirts that completely cover the torso. (See Professional Appearance Policy -- Internal access only.)

Is there housing or a stipend available?
Housing and stipend are not available with this internship program. However, many rental properties are available in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Contact the Housing Clearinghouse at 319-335-3055, 172 Iowa Memorial Union, Iowa City, IA 52242.

What is the hospital like?
The UI Hospitals and Clinics is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country, with 680 beds. It takes about five to seven minutes to walk the length of the hospital, so interns should come with comfortable shoes.

Should I bring my car?
Although cars are nice to have to get around town, parking at the hospital is very difficult. If possible, it is easiest to use public transportation. The Iowa City Transit and the Coralville bus system are wonderful, and can usually get you close to your destination. In addition, the Universtiy has a bus system called the Cambus. The Cambus is free, and can bring you right to the hospital.

What is the weather like in Iowa?
Iowa has four distinct seasons. Winter can bring very cold temperatures and summer can be hot and humid. Interns should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.
