The Sports Medicine team at UI Hospitals Clinics is composed of physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and rehabilitation aides. Combined, the team has many years of experience caring for athletic injuries.
Our proximity to the physicians in UI Hospitals Clinics and the University of Iowa Student Health Service assures that we are in constant contact and providing care that your physician feels is appropriate for your condition. We also have the opportunity to view your office operative notes or radiologic (x-rays and MRI) results so that we can target our treatment to the exact tissue that has been injured.
Our staff stays abreast of advances in sports medicine by actively attending professional meetings such as the Hawkeye Sports Medicine Symposium, an annual conference designed for sports medicine physicians and rehabilitation professionals put on by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Iowa Athletic Trainer's Society.
The sports team at UI Hospitals Clinics specializes in the care of orthopedic injuries to the extremities and spine, such as:
- muscular strains
- joint sprains
- meniscal injuries
- overuse injuries
- nursitis
- pre- and post-op rehabilitation for joint or ligament reconstruction
- fractures
- amputations
- arthritis
Our staff utilizes their knowledge of research from the literature and their clinical experience to develop clinical treatments for sports-related injuries. These protocols are then individualized for your particular problem by going through a thorough one-on-one evaluation for up to 45 minutes during your initial session. Your treatment will be implemented using the very latest in sports medicine technology including:
- electrical stimulation
- biofeedback
- computerized strength testing/training
- therapeutic pool
The staff also supplements these treatments through the use of manual techniques to serve as both a treatment and a re-evaluation of the recovery status of your injury.
Our partnership with numerous educational institutions as a site for clinical education of Physical Therapy students and our ability to accept patients from a wide array of physicians gives our clinic a dynamic mix of old and young, athletic and sedentary that we find enjoyable and motivating. We look forward to working with you, whatever your injury or problem, to help you return to your "field of play" whether that is your backyard garden or a football field or basketball court. |
