About Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is an individualized program comprised of exercise, education, and nutritional assessment for people with pulmonary diseases to help symptoms and improve the ability to perform day-to-day activities. The program meets three times per week for eight weeks.

A multidisciplinary team approach is used to assist individuals in achieving their optimal physical, psychosocial, and vocational potential.

Prior to entering the program patients receive:
  • A medical evaluation by a pulmonary physician
  • Comprehensive testing of lung function and exercise abilities
  • An evaluation of general health and other conditions that might influence the ability to participate in rehabilitation

The goals for participants are to:

  • Reduce and control breathing difficulties and other symptoms
  • Learn about the specific lung disease, its treatment, and coping strategies
  • Learn to manage their disease and remain independent
  • Achieve and/or maintain healthy behaviors such as smoking cessation, good nutrition, and regular exercise
  • Reduce the frequency and length of hospital stays and increase their chances of living longer
