The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is an individualized program comprised of exercise, education, and nutritional assessment for people with pulmonary diseases to help symptoms and improve the ability to perform day-to-day activities. The program meets three times per week for eight weeks.
A multidisciplinary team approach is used to assist individuals in achieving their optimal physical, psychosocial, and vocational potential.
Prior to entering the program patients receive:
- A medical evaluation by a pulmonary physician
- Comprehensive testing of lung function and exercise abilities
- An evaluation of general health and other conditions that might influence the ability to participate in rehabilitation
The goals for participants are to:
- Reduce and control breathing difficulties and other symptoms
- Learn about the specific lung disease, its treatment, and coping strategies
- Learn to manage their disease and remain independent
- Achieve and/or maintain healthy behaviors such as smoking cessation, good nutrition, and regular exercise
- Reduce the frequency and length of hospital stays and increase their chances of living longer
