Free Screening

Is this you?

  • Over the age of 45
  • Have an immediate family member with diabetes
  • Overweight, especially with an increased abdominal girth
  • Had gestational diabetes (i.e., diabetes only when pregnant)
  • Have polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Delivered a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth
  • Have high blood sugar levels from steroid therapy
  • Are of Native American, Hispanic, African American, Asian American or Pacific Island descent
  • Have hypertension
  • Have an abnormal lipid (blood fat) profile
  • Have a history of cardiovascular disease

If you have one or more of these, you are at increased risk for having pre-diabetes, IGT, or type 2 diabetes. You are encouraged to take advantage of the free REACH screening at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This consists of a risk factor assessment and a fasting venous blood sample for a diagnostic quality blood glucose measurement.

If the diagnosis of pre-diabetes or IGT is made, we strongly recommend follow-up with your health care provider. In addition, you may benefit from the REACH eight-week program, which is designed to improve health by modifying lifestyle factors that increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and related complications.
