Recreation Therapy for
Adult Medical/Surgical Patients


Certified therapeutic recreation specialists provide services on an individual basis for long-term adult patients and assess each patient's leisure interests including:
  • Supportive visits for patients and families
  • Craft activities
  • Table and card games
  • Leisure counseling
  • Adaptive activities
  • Procedural support
  • Community re-entry activities

Recreation therapists also help patients access:

Therapeutic Recreation services are available on a referral basis for long-term adult patients receiving treatment from:

  • Clinical Cancer Center
  • Organ and Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Intermediate Pulmonary Care
  • Antepartum (high-risk maternity)

Appropriate referrals for Therapeutic Recreation include patients:

  • Hospitalized for more than three weeks
  • Confined to their rooms or bed rest
  • Experiencing major lifestyle changes
  • With special cognitive or emotional disorders
  • Who don't have family or other support systems
