The Adult Psychiatry Units at UI Hospitals and Clinics consists of three units:
- Eating and mood disorder unit
- Neuro-psychiatric unit
- Geriatric unit
These units provide services to adults (18 years of age and older) with a variety of mental illnesses. The average length of stay is less than two weeks.
Three recreation therapists are assigned to inpatient units and work closely with the multidisciplinary team which consists of nursing staff, physicians, social workers, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and dietary.
Recreation therapists help patients improve their quality of life and help in their recovery by teaching skills through activities that increase self-esteem and encourage positive change. The main emphasis of the program is to enhance patients' well-being and promote a healthy lifestyle through therapeutic activities and skill building groups. The therapists work with patients to improve illness management and promote independence and active participation in their daily lives.

- Animal Assisted Therapy
Group activities are scheduled daily and patients are encouraged to participate as allowed. Physicians may also refer patients to small group or individual sessions to address specific needs.
