A certified therapeutic recreation specialist works with inpatients in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit at UI Hospitals and Clinics. The therapists provide activities for patients, ranging in age from three to 18 years old, with a variety of diagnoses. Most patients are referred by psychiatrists or other health care providers.
The therapists also work with day-treatment patients in the Circle School Program. Circle School provides special education programs for day school students. Students are enrolled from a few months to the entire school year. Patients from the inpatient program also attend the school.
Circle School students participate in the Recreation Therapy Program including two to four therapeutic groups per day. The goal is to enhance the patient's well-being, improve quality of life, and promote a healthy leisure lifestyle through participation in skill building groups and leisure activities. Therapeutic groups focus on stress management, anger management, improving self-esteem, creative expression, music therapy, social skills, and health maintenance.
