Hyperbaric Oxygen Treats
A Range of Conditions
With the largest hyperbaric chamber in Iowa, the UI Hyperbaraic Medicine and Wound Care Clinic, serves as a regional hyperbaric medicine service. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions including carbon monoxide poisoning, severe infections, the "bends" and crush injuries.
The clinic, located in Pappajohn Pavilion, Level 5, is staffed by specially trained faculty physicians, respiratory therapists, biomedical personnel, and other technical support staff. They are also trained in critical care, advanced life support and diving and decompression medicine.
A hyperbaric chamber is a large, steel tank that administers 100 percent oxygen in a high pressure environment. The chamber can hold up to six patients plus up to two hyperbaric medicine specialists. |
