Respiratory care is a health care occupation comprised of practitioners who,
under physician supervision, are trained to actively participate in the care of patients,
especially the monitoring and treatment of cardiopulmonary function.
The practice of respiratory care encompasses activities in the areas of
diagnosis, therapeutics, administration and education. The University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics Department of Respiratory Care provides services to Adult, Pediatric and
Neonatal patients in three major patient service areas.
Clinical Service provides mechanical ventilation (conventional, non-invasive and high frequency),
continuous positive airway pressure, airway management, delivery of aerosolized
medications, bronchopulmonary hygiene, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen and specialty medical gas administration, patient
consultation, internal and external transports, home care discharge planning and
education, and other clinical aspects of respiratory care.
Diagnostic Service provides diagnostic services,
including pulmonary function, exercise testing, bronchoscopy,
sleep studies, medicated aerosol delivery, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis,
metabolic measurement, transtracheal catheter placement, and other diagnostic aspects of
respiratory care.
