In addition to our staff interpreters and translators, we utilize the services of approximately 150 individuals who provide interpretation and translation services in over 40 languages on a free-lance basis.
Qualifications and requirements needed
Language Bank interpreters at UI Hospitals and Clinics need to meet the following qualifications:
- Native or near-native fluency in English and a foreign language(s)
- Training or experience in interpreting, and/or interpreting skill/aptitude
- Some familiarity with and level of comfort in working in a medical setting
- Proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States

Please make an appointment to meet with one of the staff interpreters to obtain further information about the Language Bank, to complete an initial screening, and to receive answers to any questions you may have. When you join the Language Bank, you will receive a complete orientation manual and information packet.
Joining the Language Bank
In order to process your initial appointment as a Language Bank interpreter, you must also complete a number of forms and give them to the Office Coordinator. Interpreters cannot be paid until all the required screening and forms are completed.
