In Iowa, there are many different medical assistance programs. To qualify, you must be either under age 21, pregnant, blind, disabled, over age 65, or a caretaker relative for a dependant child under age 18. You may qualify for Medicaid even if you are covered by health insurance.
Medicaid may cover physician charges, dentist charges, prescription drugs, hospitals, chiropractors, optometrists, physical therapy, nursing home care, and psychologists.
Medicaid for the medically needy: The Medically Needy program is designed for people who meet the basic eligibility criteria for Medicaid and who have resources and income that are limited, but that exceed the guidelines for FIP and SSI. Sometimes individual's or family's medical costs severely affect their ability to live on their income and resources. Medically Needy is a program designed to provide medical coverage through Medicaid for these people. You may have a spend down or deductible.
How to apply: If you feel you or your family may qualify for Medicaid or for Medically Needy, call your county Department of Human Services to apply.
You may qualify for another Iowa program, "State Papers," if you are denied Medicaid through the Medically Needy program. The Iowa law states you must be denied Medicaid before applying for State Papers.
What to do if you are denied: If you are denied Medicaid or Medically Needy coverage, you can appeal the denial by writing to your Department of Human Services and requesting a hearing.
