About Clinical Pastoral Education

Clinical Pastoral Education was conceived by Dr. Richard Cabot as a way of learning pastoral practice in a clinical setting under supervision. The Rev. Anton Boisen enlarged the concept to include a case study method, studying the "living human document. The program integrates a knowledge of medicine, ethics and the behavioral sciences into pastoral practice.

Using focused seminars sessions, this ministry is reviewed through by the participant’s supervisor and peers in the training program. Personal reflection on one’s ministry is facilitated through written reports designed to support the learning process.

By reviewing complicated life situations from differing points of view, students gain new insights and understandings about the human situation. Theological reflection is an important part of the review process in helping students integrating theological understandings with life experience.

The goal of the program is that, in addition to learning pastoral skills, the student works to become pastoral through identifying and building upon his or her unique personality and gifts.

Accreditation

UI Hospitals and Clinics Programs of Clinical Pastoral Education are accredited by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., a multicultural, multifaith organization devoted to providing education and improving the quality of ministry and pastoral care offered by spiritual caregivers of all faiths through the clinical educational methods of Clinical Pastoral Education.
