Clinical Pastoral Education was conceived by Dr. Richard
Cabot as a method of learning pastoral practice in a
clinical setting under supervision. The Rev. Anton Boisen
enlarged the concept to include a case study method,
studying the "living human document. The program integrates
into pastoral practice a knowledge of medicine, ethics and
the behavioral sciences.
Clinical pastoral education is theological and
professional education for ministry, where learning is
derived from the supervised practice of ministry. The
foundation of CPE is the practice of ministry; the
participant functions in a pastoral role providing spiritual
care to persons in crisis. This ministry is then critically,
yet supportively, reviewed by the participants
supervisor and peers in the training program through a
variety of focused seminars sessions. Personal reflection on
ones ministry is also facilitated through structured
written reports designed to support the learning
process.
Through reviewing complicated life situations from
differing points of view, students are able to gain new
insights and understandings about the human situation.
Theological reflection is an important part of the review
process in assisting the student in integrating theological
understandings with life experience. The goal of the program
is that the student in addition to learning pastoral skills;
also strives to become pastoral through identifying and
building upon his or her unique personality and gifts.
