Supervisory Clinical Pastoral Education


Second Year

Unit I
Theme: Dynamics of the Supervisory Process

Goals

  1. To facilitate a variety of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) learning group seminars
  2. To do individual supervision with CPE students
  3. To be knowledgeable of the supervisor-student power imbalance and to know how to use it for learning purposes

Clinical:

  • Supervise an Extended unit of CPE (September through May)

Academic/Conceptual:
Read:

  • Ekstein, Rudolf & Wallerstein, Robert. The Teaching and learning of Psychotherapy.
  • Mueller, William J. & Kell, Bill L. Coping with Conflict.
  • Rutter, Peter. Sex in the Forbidden Zone. Los Angeles: J.P. Toucher, 1987.

Write:

  • Process notes on the CPE group in which milestones in the groups’ formation are identified.

Milestone:

  • Submit position papers to Certification Commission


Unit II
Themes: Putting supervisory knowledge into practice
Cultural awareness

Goals

  1. To be knowledge about the components of culture
  2. To be able to identify differences in human behavior that are culturally influenced
  3. To be aware of how culture influences religion and religious practices.
  4. To use cultural differences as a learning resource in CPE supervision.

Learning Tasks

Clinical:

  • Supervise an Extended unit of CPE (September — May)
  • Plan a summer unit of CPE
  • Recruit and interview applicants, select participants

  • Process notes on the CPE Groups
  • Process notes on each student’s individual supervision
  • A five-page paper on cultural influences in CPE groups


Unit III
Theme: Evaluations: Student and Program

Goals:

  1. To write final evaluations that accurately reflect the student’s leanings while in CPE.
  2. To do a program evaluation.
  3. Receive approval of one’s position papers by the Certification Commission.
  4. Submit the position papers to the Certification Commission.

Learning Tasks

Clinical:

  • Supervise an Extended unit of CPE (September through May)
  • Evaluate the Extended Unit students
  • Evaluate the Extended CPE Program
  • Plan a summer unit of CPE (continued)
  • Recruit and interview applicants, select participants (continued)

Write:

  • Final Evaluations on the participating CPE students

Unit IV
Theme: Developing Supervisory competence

Goals

  1. Conduct a single (summer) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education
  2. Identify the interaction between, and the effects of, CPE learning group and the various systems of the institution

  • Supervise a summer unit of CPE
