When to Come to the UI Sports Medicine Center

e-Newsletter, Spring 2006

Physical activity is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Before starting a new exercise or fitness program you should talk to your doctor, particularly if you are on medications or have other health problems. A sports medicine specialist will advise you on the necessary precautions and on the intensity level and type of activity that will be both safe and beneficial.

But if you are already participating in a physical activity or sports program, you should see your doctor if:

  • You are unable to play or participate because of an injury.
  • Your ability to participate declines or is more difficult.
  • You have a noticeable deformity or swelling of a limb or joint.
  • You suffer with pain or discomfort while participating in a sport.

Call the UI Sports Medicine Center at 319-384-7070.
