Sports Medicine Research

e-Newsletter, Spring 2006
By Glenn Williams, Ph.D., P.T., A.T.C.

Research is an important part of the UI Sports Medicine Center mission because the resulting evidence provides the basis for clinical practice and education. The primary topics of research for our faculty include:

  • The mechanism and effects of joint instability injuries (e.g., ACL tears, shoulder dislocations, ankle sprains)
  • The efficacy and effectiveness of surgical and rehabilitation treatment methods for joint instability injuries, rotator cuff lesions, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis
  • The relationship between joint instability injuries and post-traumatic osteoarthritis injuries
  • Neuromuscular function in people with knee and shoulder injuries.

In addition, our faculty collaborates with other scientists in the UI Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, the UI College of Engineering, The UI College of Public Health, and the UI Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. We also collaborate with scientists in academic medical centers such as the University of Utah, and with the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network. We are committed to excellence in research and discovering new and better methods of treating sports medicine patients

Research funding is provided in part by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Football League, and friends of the UI Sports Medicine Center.
