Statistics related to mental health disorders:

  • More than two million American adults are affected by schizophrenia each year, with one in 10 committing suicide.
  • Schizophrenia is responsible for 22 percent of all mental illness costs in this country, yet only one percent of the population has the disease.
  • Almost all people who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental disorder, most commonly depression or a substance abuse disorder.
  • Nearly 5.3 million American adults have a social phobia in a given year.
  • Anxiety disorders cost over $4 billion each year.
  • In the United States, 5.2 million people have post-traumatic stress disorder in a given year.
  • Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide in persons older than five years old, and costs this country close to $43 billion each year in lost productivity and absenteeism.
