Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are a cluster of illnesses including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and phobias. The hallmark symptoms of anxiety are the manifestations of worry in the form of physical symptoms such as upset stomach, racing heart, shortness of breath, and jitteriness.

  • Adult Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment for patients with anxiety. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Adult Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One.   • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment for patients with anxiety disorders.   • Pediatric Psychology offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment services for children and adolescents with complaints of anxiety. Evaluation is focused on determining what type of treatment modality would be most effective and the impact of physical complaints on the child’s/adolescent’s anxiety. Services include individual counseling, biofeedback, and relaxation training. Call 888-573-5437 or 319-356-2434.
  • Adult Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment for patients with anxiety. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. Asperger’s Disorder
Aspergr's disorder is a condition in the autism spectrum defined by problems with social interaction, restricted and repetitive interests, and behavior patterns. In contrast to autism there are no significant delays in language development.

  • Center for Disabilities and Development provides diagnostic services and treatment planning for Asperger’s disorder and other autism spectrum disorders. Interdisciplinary team evaluations pinpoint cognitive and behavioral strengths and weaknesses that require specific treatments or educational accommodations. Motor coordination problems and nonverbal processing disorders associated with Asperger’s disorder can be evaluated as needed by neuropsychologists or occupational therapists who are part of the CDD team.   • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service offers diagnostic and developmental evaluations, which address social, emotional, learning, communication, behavioral, and school programming needs, for patients with Asperger’s Disorder through a multidisciplinary team approach. Individualized treatment options and programming recommendations are made for medical, psychological, educational, speech language, behavioral management and parent support. This evaluation also addresses the needs of higher functioning students and critical transitions to high school, college and vocational programs. We may make referral for specialized services within University of Iowa Health Care or further evaluation/services within Child Psychiatry Services, (such as individual therapy, family counseling, neuropsychological testing) as necessary.   • Neuropsychology Service of Psychiatry provides comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment services to inpatients and outpatients. Such procedures are helpful in assessing persons with congenital or acquired cerebral dysfunction, learning/developmental disabilities, and the cognitive/emotional aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. In persons with Asperger’s Syndrome, careful neuropsychological assessment can assist in educational planning, vocational rehabilitation, and disability determination. 39-353-6071 or 319-356-2063.
  • Pediatric Psychology provides diagnostic assessment and treatment services for child and adolescents with question of Asperger’s disorder including comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to differentiate this disorder from related conditions such as autism, nonverbal learning disorder or cognitive deficits. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
People with ADHD suffer from a cluster of symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms are manifest in multiple settings.

  • Center for Disabilities and Development provides evaluation and treatment services for children and adolescents with attention deficits and/or hyperactive behavior. Evaluating the contexts in which these problems occur and differentiating ADHD from disorders of memory or learning are typically important parts of the evaluation. Recommendations for medical management are provided by pediatricians trained in the management of developmental and behavioral disorders. Such procedures are helpful in assessing persons with congenital or acquired cerebral dysfunction, learning/developmental disabilities, and the cognitive/emotional aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. For persons with ADHD, neuropsychological assessment can help identify severity, other associated conditions/disabilities, as well as assist in educational/vocational planning.   • Pediatric Psychology offers diagnostic and treatment services to children, adolescents, and college students with attention and/or hyperactivity problems. Several clinics provide consultations to physicians, schools, parents, and other community providers. Physicians often refer to this clinic to determine whether medication is needed to treat ADHD. Autism Spectrum Disorders are developmental disorders characterized by severe and perseverative impairment in several areas of development including: communication, language skills, social interactions, behavior, and range of interests.

  • Center for Disabilities and Development provides diagnostic services and treatment planning for autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger’s disorder and pervasive developmental disorders. Evaluation is provided by an interdisciplinary team experienced in differentiating autism spectrum disorders from other significant neurodevelopmental disorders that may involve communication problems, social skills deficits, mental retardation, or specific cognitive impairments. Specific cognitive strengths and weaknesses can be determined, and consultation about appropriate educational programming is provided. Referrals can be made to the Center’s Biobehavioral Service if applied behavior analysis is needed to help manage especially difficult behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders.   • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service offers diagnostic and developmental evaluations, consultation, and treatment for patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders through a team approach. The multidisciplinary team evaluation approach has continued since the original Iowa Autism Project in 1976. The evaluations are tailored to the individual to address critical child and adolescent life needs for social, developmental, emotional, communication, learning and behavioral functioning. Our evaluation, which integrates information from parents, schools, physicians, and other agencies, focuses on the assessment of skills through formal and informal measures. The team then develops recommendations for medical, psychological, educational and speech language issues.
