Brain Injuries
The brain can be injured by head trauma or many different diseases, such as stroke, tumor, and neurodegenerative conditions. Injury to the brain can occur at any time of life, from infancy to old age, and can affect thinking abilities, emotions, and social behavior. Thorough evaluation following brain injury allows development of individually tailored rehabilitation programs.

For More Information

  • Benton Neuropsychology Laboratory of Neurology provides comprehensive evaluation and rehabilitation for patients with brain injury due to head trauma, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, or other neurological conditions. Neuropsychology provides assessment of key aspects of cognition and behavior which may be affected by brain dysfunction (e.g., memory, attention, language, perception, intellectual abilities, problem solving, academic abilities and emotion). Services are provided in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Neuropsychological evaluations are provided for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, monitoring cognitive changes over time, and determination of competencies. Outpatient neuropsychological rehabilitation is available to treat acquired impairments of cognition, behavior, and emotion resulting from brain injury. Call 319-356-2671 or 877-384-8999.
  • Center for Disabilities and Development evaluates and treats children and adolescents who have sustained a brain injury from trauma, infection, tumor, anoxia, stroke, or neurodegenerative conditions. The Center’s Pediatric Brain Injury Clinic’s, interdisciplinary team, evaluates speech/language skills, memory, motor skills, mood and behavior, and self-regulation or "executive" functions. Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment is typically part of the evaluation. Clinic staff seek to enhance school and community re-integration by designing rehabilitation and accommodation strategies to overcome real-life problems that result from brain injury. Acute inpatient rehabilitation services are also offered as a treatment option. Call 319-353-6900 or -877-686-0031.
  • Neuropsychology Service of Psychiatry provides comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment services to inpatients and outpatients. Emphasis is placed on providing services to patients of the Psychiatry Department. Neuropsychological assessment involves systematic evaluation of intellectual functioning, memory, language, visuospatial abilities, planning/organization, academic skills, and emotional processing to assess cognitive functioning in persons with known or suspected brain dysfunction. The comprehensive evaluation provides information to clarify diagnosis, monitor mental status change/disability status, and assess cognitive abilities that affect functional capacity for decision-making (e.g., competency), vocational planning, and other areas of daily living. The procedures are helpful in assessing persons with congenital or acquired cerebral dysfunction, learning/developmental disabilities, and the neurocognitive/emotional aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. Call 319-353-6071 or 319-356-2063.
