Eating Disorders
These illnesses are manifested by patients who refuse to maintain normal body weight, have an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Behaviors include restricting food intake, binging on large quantities of food, and purging calories through vomiting, diuretics, laxatives, over-exercising, or other means.

  • Adult Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation and treatment for patients with eating disorders. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Adult Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One. Adult Psychiatry Services include medication management, psychological testing, individual therapy and group therapy. Call 319-353-6314 or 877-384-8999.
  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation and treatment for patients with eating disorders. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services include medication management, educational consultation/testing, psychological testing, individual therapy and family counseling.   • Neuropsychology Service of Psychiatry provides comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment services to inpatients and outpatients. Such procedures are helpful in assessing persons with congenital or acquired cerebral dysfunction, learning/developmental disabilities, and the cognitive/emotional aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. Patients with eating disorders can benefit from evaluation of associated psychiatric conditions, including concerns regarding cognitive abilities. 319-353-6071 or 356-2063.
  • Partial Hospital Programs. The Partial Hospitalization Eating Disorder Program is part of the continuum of care for adolescent and adult patients. Intensive psychiatric services are provided in an outpatient setting. Some people enter the program directly from the community. For others it is a transition from an inpatient stay. The short-term treatment program offers services at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, five-days-a-week with staff available between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Partial hospitalization treatment includes meal prescriptions, cognitive behavioral group therapy, social work intervention, medical support, psychopharmacology, dietary guidance and occupational, recreational and educational groups.   • Pediatric Psychology offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment services for children and adolescents with complaints of eating disorders. Evaluation is focused on determining what type of treatment modality would be most effective and the impact of physical complaints on the child’s/adolescent’s eating disorders. Services include individual counseling, biofeedback, and relaxation training. Call 888-573-5437 or 319-356-2434.
