Memory and Cognitive Disorders
Services include comprehensive evaluation and rehabilitation for patients with known or suspected brain dysfunction due to dementia, head trauma, stroke, or other neuropsychiatric conditions. Services are provided in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Purposes for evaluation include detection of subtle cognitive impairments, specification of patterns of deficits to aid diagnosis and treatment planning, monitoring changes in cognitive status, and determination of competencies.

  • Center for Disabilities and Development provides neuropsychological assessment and educational evaluation/consultation for children and adolescents with memory deficits and other cognitive impairments that are often associated with brain injury, seizures, brain tumors, and other neurological disorders. These services can help in identifying specific cognitive strengths and weaknesses, monitoring cognitive change in response to treatment, determining disability status, and designing appropriate educational programming.: Call 319-353-6900 or 877-686-0031.
  • Benton Neuropsychology Laboratory of Neurology provides comprehensive evaluation and rehabilitation for patients with brain injury due to head trauma, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, or other neurological conditions. Neuropsychology provides assessment of key aspects of cognition and behavior which may be affected by brain dysfunction (e.g., memory, attention, language, perception, intellectual abilities, problem solving, academic abilities and emotion). Services are provided in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Neuropsychological evaluations are provided for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, monitoring cognitive changes over time, determination of competencies, and forensic evaluations. Outpatient neuropsychological rehabilitation is provided to treat acquired impairments of cognition, behavior, and emotion resulting from brain injury. Call 319-356-2671 or 877-384-8999.
  • Memory Disorders Clinic of Neurology, through the, provides comprehensive evaluation and management of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Concerns regarding changes in memory or other aspects of thinking in older adults are addressed by an interdisciplinary team, including specialists in neurology, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, geriatric nursing, and behavior management.   • Neuropsychology Service of Psychiatry provides comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment services to inpatients and outpatients. Emphasis is placed on providing services to patients of the Psychiatry Department. Neuropsychological assessment involves systematic evaluation of intellectual functioning, memory, language, visuospatial abilities, planning/organization, academic skills, and emotional processing to assess cognitive functioning in persons with known or suspected brain dysfunction. The comprehensive evaluation provides information to clarify diagnosis, monitor mental status change/disability status, and assess cognitive abilities that affect functional capacity for decision-making (e.g., competency), vocational planning, and other areas of daily living. The procedures are helpful in assessing persons with congenital or acquired cerebral dysfunction, learning/developmental disabilities, and the neurocognitive/emotional aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. 319-353-6071 or 319-356-2063.
  • Pediatric Psychology provides assessment and treatment recommendations for children and adolescents with memory and other cognitive impairments secondary to neurological conditions such as seizure disorders, genetic developmental disorders, and brain tumors. Mental Retardation
This disorder has onset before the age of 18 and is manifested in significantly below average intellectual functioning and concurrent deficits in adaptive functioning in two or more of the following areas: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, use of community resources, self-direction, functional academic skills, work, leisure, health, and safety. Mental retardation is often described in terms of degree of impairment (mild, moderate, severe, or profound) or the types and intensities of supportive services needed (intermittent, limited, extensive, or pervasive).

  • Center for Disabilities and Development provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services to individuals with mental retardation across the lifespan. Services include evaluating current cognitive and adaptive functioning, promoting school and community inclusion, and helping to manage adjustment problems and challenging behaviors. The Center’s Biobehavioral Service provides applied behavior analysis of problems such as self-injury, aggression, and noncompliance, as well as developing treatment plans to improve communication and social skills. For adults with mental retardation, evaluation and treatment are provided for severe behavior disorders; outreach/consultation is also provided to assist clients in adapting to work settings and group living environments.
