Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by repetitive obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that must be repeated to relieve the anxiety. Typical obsessions include thoughts about contamination, fear of harming oneself or others, or repeating certain words or phrases. Examples of compulsive behaviors include excessive hand washing or cleaning, checking, and counting behaviors. OCD is believed to be a brain disorder and is treated with medication and behavior therapy.

  • Adult psychiatry provides evaluation, consultation and treatment for patients with obsessive/compulsive and related disorders, such as trichotillomania (hair pulling) and body dysmorphic disorder. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Adult Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One. Adult Psychiatry Services include medication management, psychological testing, individual therapy and group therapy. In addition, an OCD support group, facilitated by psychiatrists, social workers and psychologists, meets once a month on the second Thursday of each month in the waiting room of the Adult Psych Outpatient Clinic.   • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation and treatment for patients with obsessive/compulsive or related disorders. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services include medication management, educational consultation/testing, psychological testing, individual therapy and family counseling.   • Pediatric Psychology offers evaluation, consultation, and treatment services for children and adolescents with complaints of OCD. Evaluation is focused on determining what type of treatment modality would be most effective and the impact of physical complaints on the child’s/adolescent’s OCD. Services include individual counseling, biofeedback, and relaxation training. Call 888-573-5437 or 319-356-2434.
