Pain-Related Conditions
These illnesses are manifested by pain with or without physical findings that support the degree of pain or disability.

  • Anesthesia Department Pain Clinic conducts psychological evaluation and testing to provide treatment recommendations for chronic pain patients as well as a consultative opinion for medical staff working with these patients. Pain management psychotherapy is also provided. Call 319-356-2320 or 877-384-8999.
  • Pediatric Psychology evaluates and treats children and adolescents with medical conditions that affect their emotional status and physical complaints. These may be psychological such as headaches, abdominal pain, and other physical complaints as well as anxiety, phobia, and depression. Biofeedback and relaxation training are offered. This clinic is particularly helpful to physicians, schools, and counselors in recommending how to deal with the health and emotional adjustment of these children and youth.   • Adult Psychiatry offers the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program for people with chronic pain such as migraine or stress-related headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis and pain related to medical conditions/treatment such as cancer. This is an eight-week program that is offered several times throughout the year. Call 319-384-5089.434.

Personality Disorders
This cluster of illnesses involves persistent, inflexible, and maladaptive patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are part of an individual’s personality traits.

  • Adult Psychiatry offers evaluation, consultation and treatment for patients with personality disorders. During the initial evaluation or consultation, individual recommendations for treatment are discussed. This treatment may be provided in the Adult Psychiatry Clinic or in our downtown location at Plaza Centre One. Adult Psychiatry Services include medication management, psychological testing, individual therapy, and group therapy. Call 319-353-6314 or 877-384-8999.

Borderline Personality Disorder Programs

  • Integrated Multi-agency Proactive and Coordinated Treatment Program (IMPACT-B) provides case management paired with psychotherapy and rehabilitation services to persons with Borderline Personality Disorder who have been high utilizers of care. Call 877-384-8999 or 319-353-7576.
  • Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS). The Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) treatment program in the Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic is a cognitive-behavioral, systems-based group model that reframes BPD as an emaotional intensity disorder. Identified by the acronym STEPPS, the approach teaches emotion regulation and life-style behavior skills to patients, and provides education and coping skills to their health care providers, family, and significant others. The 20-week program meets two hours a week. A follow-up program provides twice monthly meetings for one year and teaches advanced skills and reinforcement of previously learned techniques.
