Bipolar Affective Disorders (Manic Depression)
These illnesses are characterized by disturbances in mood. Depressive disorders
include a spectrum of illnesses with persistently low mood, manifested by sleep
disturbance, changes in appetite, crying spells, irritability, loss of interest
in activities, feelings of guilt or hopelessness, trouble concentrating, or
suicidal thoughts. Patients with bipolar affective disorder may also have episodes
of depression but these are intermixed with episodes of mania, manifested by
decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, pressured speech, impulsivity, distractibility,
bizarre behaviors or thoughts, and hyperactivity.
